The US administration, led by Donald Trump, has announced the removal of fishing restrictions in the Northeast canyons and seamounts marine national monument. The area was designated as protected on 15 September 2016 by then-president Barack Obama, and covers more than 12,700 square kilometres in the Atlantic Ocean.
Trump: “The economy must be strengthened”
The explanation provided by the White House echoes those Trump has used to justify the systematic dismantling of many other regulations aimed at protecting the environment, biodiversity and the climate: in his view, the existing rules are “unnecessary”. Above all, he argued, “the United States’ economy must be strengthened, and coastal communities must be supported”.

Not forgetting the mantra that has formed the basis of the trade war launched by the American billionaire through the imposition of tariffs: “We must restore fairness to an industry disadvantaged by excessive regulation compared with foreign competition”.
Rare and endangered species live in the area
The Northeast Canyons and Seamounts marine reserve is located off the coast of New England, the far northeastern tip of the United States, which includes the states of Maine, Vermont, Connecticut and Massachusetts. The area is rich in underwater mountains and includes three canyons, habitats where endangered whales and other rare species can be found, some of which have not been observed anywhere else in the world. The monument is home in particular to sperm whales, rorquals and Kemp’s ridley sea turtles.
The species most at risk are threatened precisely by excessive fishing (alongside climate change). This was the argument Obama put forward when he explained the decision to make the area a zone where fishing activities are restricted. A real tug-of-war has emerged between the former Democratic president and the leader of the MAGA movement, who had already reopened the area to fishing during his first term.

In the statement announcing the repeal of the environmental protections, Trump also claimed that the plant and animal species in question are already adequately safeguarded by existing laws: “Commercial fishing, when properly managed, does not endanger objects of historic and scientific interest,” he declared.
The world is in “water bankruptcy,” and the Blue Book 2026 paints a picture of a country that wastes nearly four out of ten litres, where inequalities prevail.
