The winners of the National Geographic Travel Photographer of the Year 2018 have been announced. Here are the best pictures of the contest dedicated to photography in the world.
The underwater photo showing the majesty of the tail of a humpback whale calf is the winner of one of the prestigious photo contests of the National Geographic magazine, the Travel Photographer of the Year 2018. Titled Mermaid, the image has been shot by Japanese photographer Reiko Takahashi on Kumejima Island, off the coasts of Japan, and has earn her the Grand prize and the first place of the Nature category. Takahashi, a passionate of underwater photography, was on the island to document humpback whales and their cubs.

The winners of the National Geographic Travel Photographer of the Year 2018
The winning pictures have been chosen among 13,000 entries from all over the world and are divided into three categories: Nature, Cities, and People. “Along with their quality, the winning images stood out for the sensibility towards subject in all three categories for this competition,” said the jury. The contest aims to document, thanks to bold and curious photographers of all levels, all corners of the Planet celebrating their multifaceted aspects. Among the stories told by the scenes that have been captured are the scenic beauty of flamingos taking off in Tanzania, a vintage tram in a rainy day in Nagasaki and two twin sisters who ran away from Haiti to run after their dream, in Brazil, of becoming actresses.
