There are 65 million displaced people worldwide. 2015 broke all records

L’allarme dell’Alto commissariato delle Nazioni Unite per i rifugiati: il numero di persone in fuga dalle loro terre non è mai stato così alto.

More than 65 million people were forced to leave their land, homes and cities to flee war, persecutions and violence in 2015, the latest report of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees shows. The report reveals that such figure broke all global records and that the amount of people wandering to find shelter is larger than the entire population of the United Kingdom.

A 9.7% increase compared to 2014

The 5-year Syrian conflict has significantly contributed to this phenomenon. More than 5 million people decided to flee a land stage to dreadful conflicts between ISIS, rebels, Assad’s army, and foreign forces.

The number of displaced people has increased by 9.7 per cent compared to 2014. “The world is an unequal and unfair place. For this reason, many people try to move to safer places,” said High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi during the release of the report in Geneva, on the occasion of World Refugee Day.

Refugees are victims of paralysed governments

“Refugees are victims of a general stalemate due to the fact that governments are failing to take on their responsibilities,” said Jan Egeland, Secretary-General of the Norwegian NGO NRC.

In geographical terms, most of refugees come from Syria and Afghanistan. Out of a total of 65 million people, about 41 million people are “internally displaced persons”, while more than 21 million people crossed the borders of their countries to seek shelter abroad.

Moreover, only 3.2 million people are asylum seekers in industrialised countries and a report released by Oxfam in March shows that only 67,000 people obtained the “refugee” status in the world’s richest countries.
