Greta Thunberg has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize

In the fight against climate change as a cause of war and conflict, “the massive movement Greta has set in motion is a very important peace contribution”. Why young activist Greta Thunberg has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.

It looks like young climate activist Greta Thunberg is unstoppable. After having started, on her own, the school strike for climate that has given life to the #FridaysForFuture movement, which inspired and encouraged tens of thousands of students to take action all over the world, the Swedish activist has been nominated for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize.

“We have nominated Greta because the climate threat may be one of the most important causes of war and conflict. The massive movement Greta has set in motion is a very important peace contribution,” said Freddy Andre Oevstegaard, one of the three Norwegian parliamentary representatives who put forth Greta Thunberg’s name to the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

The 16-year-old activist, who wrote on her Twitter account she is “honoured and very greatful” for the nomination, was recently nominated Woman of the year by Swedish press, after taking part in some of the most important appointments in the global political scenario, such as the Climate chance conference COP24 in Katowice, Poland, and the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where she sent a clear message to the world leaders for their inaction to face the biggest threat of our time: climate change. Her message has been embraced and shared all over the world, giving life to a movement of protest – and of hope.

Greta Thunberg’s nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize

A nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize can be submitted by any person who meets the nomination criteria. Among these, they should be members of national governments of sovereign states (like the Norwegian parliamentary representatives in this case), members of the International Court of Justice and the Institut de Droit International, university professors or rectors and persons who have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. For 2019 Nobel Peace Prize, 301 candidates have been nominated, out of which 223 are individuals and 78 are organisations. While waiting for the winners of the prize, announced in October every year, Greta Thunberg will lead the event that can be defined as the capstone of the movement silently began in front of the Swedish parliament that has now been echoing in every corner of the globe: the global climate strike of the 15th of March, organised in 1,659 in 105 countries.

I think we are only seeing the beginning. I think that change is on the horizon and the people will stand up for their future.Greta Thunberg
