Greening the Islands, the conference that tackles climate change and migration

The third edition of the international conference Greening the Islands will focus on two major issues: migration and climate change.

Greening the Islands is the international conference that promotes investments for managing energy, mobility, water, waste, agriculture and tourism in minor islands encouraging the spread of best practices and innovative technologies and a collective effort involving these important green economy themes.

The third edition of the conference, organised in collaboration with the Canary Islands Government and the Instituto Tecnológico de Canarias (ITC), will be held in Gran Canaria, Spain, on the 2nd and 3rd of December. It will bring together from the Philippines, Canary and Balearic Islands, Samsø, Maldives, Cape Verde, Azores as well as Greek, Croatian and Italian minor island delegates to discuss the issues of climate change and migration.

Gianni Chianetta, Director and Scientific Coordinator of Greening the Islands said about these hot topics: “We’re committed to encouraging constant and different but complementary efforts geared towards ensuring a better quality of life in the islands. In a period when climate change and mass migration seriously threaten minor islands, we can’t avoid discussing these issues in the Canary Islands, just a stone’s throw from Africa”.

The conference will focus on the following themes: sustainable investments aimed at reducing emissions and protecting the environment, efforts to ensure the islands’ energy and water independence, good policies on immigration, resource management, and preservation of quality of life for people living on the islands. It aims to find and implement effective and sustainable solutions, in light of the entry into force of the Paris Agreement, the international treaty for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, and of what will be said at COP22, the global conference on the climate taking place at present.

The second edition of the Greening The Islands Awards will also be held during the event and will see an international jury of five experts select the most innovative and deserving initiatives. Last year the award went to El Hierro, the smallest of the Canary Islands, for seeking to meet its target of reaching 100 per cent renewable energy. This year Italy will present Favignana Zero Emissions promoted by SEA Favignana, an electric utility that will launch its first international project.
