Climate Change Conference

Avaaz. Who are the 7 biggest climate criminals “wanted” in Paris

Alla conferenza sul clima di Parigi partecipano anche i rappresentanti delle lobby dei combustibili fossili, apertamente contrari agli obiettivi della Cop 21.

Benjamin Sporton, Myron Ebell, Marc Morano, Chris Horner, Bjorn Lomborg, Fiona Wild, and James Taylor. White people, ordinary aspect, smart clothes. According to Avaaz, they are the world’s 7 most dangerous people.

Just a few days ago, Paris has been plastered with wanted posters for 7 criminals, wanted “for destroying our future”. The US NGO believes they are the biggest climate criminals, representatives of fossil fuel lobbies, openly speaking against climate action and COP21.

Avaaz activists posed as “climate policemen” and distributed posters of the wanted lobbyists across the city.

“The world is calling for a commitment to a 100% clean future at the climate summit in Paris. But a group of climate criminals is trying to stop that deal. Their tactics are different, but their end game is the same: shift the focus away from emissions targets and keep fossil fuels at the centre of human development. Some even argue that more money should be spent on coal – the worst carbon-polluting fuel. Most get paid by fossil fuel companies like Exxon to speak against climate action. Some of them have launched extreme public attacks against scientists and others”. Let’s discover who these climate criminals are.

Benjamin Sporton

Sporton is the Chief Executive of the World Coal Association (WCA), the body that represents the interests of the coal industry. The coal industry is undergoing harsh times, coal price is dropping and a climate agreement would further damage its market. Sporton hopes “to see more investment in coal, since it is the only realistic way to provide energy to much of the world’s poor”.

Myron Ebell

Ebell, lobbyist and climate denier, is Director of the Centre for Energy and Environment at the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI). CEI stands in the way of a global agreement on climate and aims to contain “scaremongering” on global warming. Between 1998 and 2005, it received over 2 million dollars by ExxonMobil.

Marc Morano

According to Morano, climate scientists “deserve to be publicly flogged”. Executive Director of the Climate Depot website, he has made a career out of spreading climate misinformation. According to Avaaz, his signature trick is to publish the email addresses of climate scientists, a move journalists suggest leads to cyber-bullying. Climate Depot has been funded by ExxonMobil and Chevron.

Chris Horner

Horner is lawyer for the Competitive Enterprise Institute and coal lobbyist. Horner’s specialty is hounding climate scientists, behaviour the Washington Post described as “harassment”. In 2015 he received about 18,000 dollars from the US coal company Alpha Natural Resources.

Bjorn Lomborg

According to Lomborg, Danish author and academic, governments should abandon the 2 degree target. Lomborg denies the efficiency of the solutions proposed by activists and governments, arguing to focus the attention on poverty reduction through technology, omitting that poor people will be those most affected by climate change. The Canadian promotional tour of his book was sponsored by the Fraser Institute, political association closely linked to ExxonMobil.

Fiona Wild

Fiona Wild represents BHP Billiton, the world’s top mining company, and is now in Paris to claim the importance of fossil fuels. BHP supported Tony Abbott’s carbon tax in Australia, helping cement Australia’s role as one of the leading greenhouse gas emitters in the world.

James Taylor

According to Taylor, representative of the Heartland Institute, a climate denial lobby group, climate change has stopped. There has been “absolutely no warming during the past 10 years.
