Ricola is a family-owned business that boasts a long tradition: founded in Laufen, Switzerland, by Emil Richterich in 1930, it has now reached its third generation.
Since 1930, Ricola has gone far, demonstrating a great capacity for innovation in the development of new flavours, recipes and formats, always in respect of tradition and the naturalness of its products made with Ricola's famous 13 herbs.
Over the last 80 years Ricola has become synonymous with quality in the production of specialities in more than 40 countries worldwide through the production of specialities made of natural medicinal herbs. The brand's notoriety is founded on simple but essential elements which, through traditions in the production of confectionery and herb specialities, comes together with the distinctive value of Ricola's home territory. Love for the environment, rigorous quality control and exclusively natural ingredients: this, in summary, is the recipe of Ricola specialities. The originality of the product is determined by the blend of 13 herbs (Elder, Horehound, Mallow, Peppermint, Sage, Thyme, Cowslip, Burnet, Yarrow, Marsh Mallow, Lady's Mantle, Speedwell, aka Veronica, Plantain) perfected in 1940 and typically used today for all Ricola products.
The Ricola product thus places itself at the heart of environmental, cultural and ethical values strongly wanted by the company, which has always placed a great deal of attention and rigour in the selection of raw materials. All the herbs used are cultivated in Swiss alpine conditions, for Ricola and applying the principles of biodynamic agriculture, i.e. without the use of phytopharmaceuticals and with the use of principally manual labour. Over a hundred companies that farm for Ricola operate according to a regime of organic agriculture and boast the "Gemma" certification, the recognition conferred by Bio Suisse (the Swiss Association of Organic Agriculture Organisations), which is awarded on the basis of even stricter criteria compared to European directives.
The variety of flavours and formats is vast: the classic sugar crystals with their typical dice shape, available in bags and cans, a choice of sugared confectionery in bags, available in Lemon Mint and Herbs, and Honey Herb sugar crystals, the new flavour in which the inimitable blend of 13 Swiss herbs is combined with the delicateness and benefits of honey.
