Donald Trump undoes Obama’s Clean Power Plan, to “stop the war on coal”
Donald Trump ha firmato il decreto che impone la revisione delle norme introdotte da Obama per limitare le emissioni di CO2 delle centrali elettriche.
On the 28th of March US President Donald Trump signed an executive order to review one of Barack Obama’s most important measures aimed at combating climate change – the Clean Power Plan. Among other things, the plan aimed to reduce CO2 emissions from US power plants.
During a speech he held at the headquarters of the Environment Protection Agency (EPA), Trump clearly reaffirmed his will of “ending the war on coal”. In the meantime, President Trump didn’t mention the word “climate”, not even once. “With today’s executive actions, I’m taking historic steps to lift the restrictions on American energy, to reverse government intrusion and to cancel job-killing regulations,” he said.
Trump eliminates subsidies to renewables
The Clean Power Plan represented the core of Obama’s environmental policies. The plan was aimed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions generated from US power plants by 30 per cent by 2020. It also provided subsidies to renewables in order to accelerate the energy transition. However, the plan was put on hold on February 2016 after an appeal filed by 27 US states (mostly Republican-led), involving the Supreme Court.
